In-Home Sleep Studies
Are you struggling to get the rest that you need? Do you feel tired all day, even after a full night’s sleep, or struggle with morning headaches? Have you wondered what you can do about loud snoring? You may be at risk of sleep apnea. To determine if you have sleep apnea and would benefit from treatment, your healthcare professional will recommend a sleep study.
Many patients express feelings of anxiety and are hesitant to have a sleep study that requires sleeping in an unfamiliar, monitored environment. Sleep studies are essential for diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. That is why Aspire Family Medical offers in-home sleep studies that allow testing in the comfort of your own bed.
Are You a Candidate for an At-Home Sleep Test?
An at-home sleep apnea test may be appropriate for you if you have signs of obstructive sleep apnea, such as:
Your sleep partner reports that you snore, snort, or gasp while sleeping
You are experiencing disrupted sleep.
You experience excessive daytime sleepiness
What is An At-Home Sleep Study?
At-home sleep apnea testing is an easy, cost-effective way to figure out whether you’re having trouble breathing and could have a sleep disorder. A home sleep apnea test involves wearing a simple device that tracks your breathing, oxygen levels, and effort while you sleep.
Sleep Studies Monitor Breathing
The sleep study will evaluate the patient’s breathing during sleep. The test does not monitor how deeply or lightly the patient sleeps, but it will measure pauses and absences in breathing patterns. The test will also evaluate how much effort it takes the patient to breathe.
Sleep Studies are Prescribed
While conducted at home, this is not an over-the-counter test. Your at-home sleep study must be prescribed by your primary care provider.
The Study Uses Sensors to Detect Breathing Patterns
Your healthcare provider will demonstrate how to use the at-home test. The test involves a sensor-equipped machine and a mask. The sensors include a small probe that goes on your finger to measure oxygen levels. Additional sensors are placed on your abdomen and chest to monitor their movement as you breathe. You will also insert another mask with tubes into your nostrils and secure it around your ears, similar to an oxygen mask.
At-Home Studies are Convenient and a Small Commitment
Most at-home sleep tests are conducted for only one night. With an at-home study, you’ll sleep in your own environment instead of a clinic, which can lead to a more accurate reading of how you actually sleep.
Please note that at-home sleep studies do not fully capture what is monitored during an overnight sleep study. In-clinic overnight sleep studies can provide a more comprehensive assessment of sleep issues. They are supervised by a sleep technologist and record additional signals, including brain waves, muscle tone, and leg movements. For individuals with certain cardiac, respiratory, or neuromuscular conditions, an overnight sleep study at a sleep center may be necessary to diagnose the underlying condition.
